The short version

What this guide says in 4 lines

  • The person you were talking to may be a team, not an individual.
  • Never warn them you are reporting — it triggers an immediate account wipe.
  • The financial recovery route is the same as any fraud; the emotional one needs its own plan.
  • You are not foolish. This is a full-time professional operation.

Romance fraud combines financial loss with betrayal. This guide deals with both — the practical recovery steps and the part nobody writes about.

How romance fraud actually works

The relationship is the product. Long, patient relationship-building over weeks or months creates a level of trust that no technical trick could produce. Only afterwards does the money request appear — usually dressed as an investment opportunity, a medical emergency, a customs fee, or a business problem.

Behind a single profile there is frequently a scripted team, with shift workers, translated text, and a bank of prepared photos. The person you were speaking to may not exist in any form you would recognise.

What to do in the first 48 hours

  • 01Do not confront them or announce you are reporting. Preserve your evidence first.
  • 02Export the full conversation, including profile details and any photos they sent.
  • 03Record the platform, the username, and any email addresses or phone numbers.
  • 04Note every payment with dates, amounts and reference numbers.
  • 05Secure your own accounts and check whether you shared any credentials.
  • 06Report the profile to the hosting platform immediately.
  • 07File with IC3 and the FTC, and notify your bank the same day.

A single message telling them you know will usually cause the profile, the chat history and the platform account to vanish within hours. Evidence first, confrontation never.

Photo and identity verification

  • 01Run a reverse image search on every photo they sent. Stolen images are the norm.
  • 02Check the profile against known fraud databases the platform may offer.
  • 03Look for inconsistencies in time zones, language register, and voice-note availability.
  • 04Ask yourself whether you ever had an unscripted video call with the actual person.
  • 05Report the images if they belong to a real, unrelated person — they are a victim too.

The financial route

Financially, romance fraud is treated exactly like any other fraud. The payment method determines the recovery route, and speed determines the odds. If the money went to a crypto address, the receiving exchange is your target. If it went by wire, a same-day recall request is your best shot.

The part that is not financial

The loss of the relationship is often harder than the loss of the money. Grief over a person who never existed is real grief, and it does not resolve faster because the person was fictional.

Two things help. First, naming it accurately: you were targeted by a professional operation, not foolish. Second, structure: a plan with concrete steps restores a sense of control that panic removes.

  • 01Tell one person you trust. Secrecy extends the harm.
  • 02Consider a counsellor who has worked with fraud victims specifically.
  • 03Avoid online "support" groups you have not verified — they are hunting grounds.
  • 04Set a rule for the next twelve months: no investment recommendations from anyone you met online.

Common questions

No, unless you know them independently. The profile's social circle is usually part of the fabrication, and you may be sharing details with the operation itself.
By replacing the story. "I was gullible" becomes "I was targeted by a professional operation designed to defeat exactly the instincts I have." The second framing is the accurate one.
